We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Winston-Salem Dead Animal Tip:

Why do squirrels die inside houses or attics?

Every animal's life ends in death, and squirrels are no exception to the rule. Often a squirrel that has taken up residence in your house will meet with an unhappy ending while living in your home. You may be a direct part of their demise if you set out traps, or lay out poison. You may also accidently (or purposely) block its entryway. If it is severe weather, and the attic is neither heated in any way, or has no adequate ventilation, the squirrels are likely to die from exposure due to the extreme weather. Other times a squirrel may chew through an electrical line and are zapped. A squirrel's death could just be an act of fate. Such is the case of young squirrels that tend to die in large numbers because of their curious nature. They often seem to find themselves in nooks and crevasses that they cannot climb out of, fall into holes they cannot escape or become ensnared by a predator that surprised them.

The same fate can befall young squirrels that live in your home. Squirrels might also die of old age; others can sustain a mortal wound and expire in your home. Many diseases can cause squirrels to die, such as, leptospirosis, multiple viral infections, pox, and certain fevers. A number of these illnesses can be spread to humans, so never touch dead squirrel if you believe it might have been sick. In fact, it is a good policy not to touch any dead animal unless wearing gloves. They all have germs, pests, and body bugs like fleas.

When you discover that you have dead animals in your home, do whatever you can to remove them as soon as possible. If you plan to DIY, you will need to have some basic supplies: latex or rubber gloves, a mask, rags, garbage bags, and an enzyme based disinfectant or bleach. You will probably also need bug spray, and some type of deodorizer. Wear all your protective gear until you have:

  • Removed the squirrel, placed it securely in the bag for disposal,
  • Sprayed the area for bugs if necessary (if the animal has been there a while, there could be flies, maggots or other carrion feeders there).
  • Removed and bagged any soft items like insulation or cloth that cannot be cleaned.
  • Cleaned all hard surfaces with disinfectant and sprayed with deodorizer.

After you have finished the job, you should discard your gloves and mask, Change from your soiled clothes and wash up with antibacterial soap. Deposit the bags of debris (carcasses included) in an outside trash bin with a tight fitting lid. Once you have confirmed that there are no more animals, in the area, take preventative measures to keep another reinfestation from happening.

If you do not want to handle this task on your own, a professional animal removal service will handle it for you. Call a local animal removal service to help get rid of the squirrels, their bodies, and for tips on keeping your home critter free.
